Alun is a Registered General Nurse who has worked in the NHS, developed a neurological rehabilitation service in the private healthcare sector, and in his time with Adferiad, has led the organisation through the development of a user-led in-patient facility run by the charity.
Alun started with the organisation in 2001 in an operational management role before taking on the deputy function in 2003. In that role he worked across all aspects of organisational development, campaigning, political and local engagement, HR, finance, and service delivery. During his time with Adferiad, Alun has achieved a first class LLB (Hons) degree with the Open University and a Master’s in the Ethics of Social Welfare; he is currently undertaking a PhD in law at the Hilary Clinton School of Law and Criminology at Swansea University. His thesis is exploring how Welsh specific legislation might provide additional rights to patients. Alun has given evidence to both the both Welsh Affairs Select Committee in Westminster and the Welsh Government on the development of the Mental Health (Wales) Measure, and was a member of the Independent Review of the Mental Health Act 1983 Advisory Panel to the UK Government. He has also been a member of the external reference panel of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and a lead steward and branch chair of the Royal College of Nursing.
Alun was appointed Chief Executive of Hafal in 2014 and in 2016 he led the organisational merger of Hafal and Crossroads Mid and West Wales which both strengthened and secured the future of the Crossroads services, and broadened the offer of the larger organisation to include people with a range of physical health needs.
Alun is a founding Trustee of Mental Health UK on behalf of Adferiad Recovery, and is a Trustee of Developing a Caring Wales representing Adferiad.
Alun was appointed as Chief Executive of Adferiad Recovery at the merger in 2021 having been part of the team which brought the merger together and is looking forward to continuously improving and developing this exciting new organisation.
Sharon has worked for Adferiad and its precursor organisations for over 30 years and has done just about every role you can think about in the third sector. From part-time entry-level administration through service delivery, local management, events, campaigning, public affairs, organisational leadership and lately as Deputy Chief Executive of an organisation with 750 plus staff.
Sharon’s great passion is service user and carer engagement and the need for their views to be paramount in everything that we do. Sharon has worked with clients who have spent many years in the highest security settings and has a strong understanding and empathy for those individuals who continue to be restricted by the mental health act. Sharon has significant experience of engaging with secure services, mental health act tribunals and families and carers of some of the most complex clients and is always seen as the honest broker between clients, families and the professionals dealing with them.
Where there is the need for a service review Sharon’s expertise in seeing things from the service user/carer perspective and the provider perspective offers a unique insight into the challenges that many operational services face every day.
Sharon has a range of sector specific, and leadership and management qualifications and a wealth of organisational skills developed from her previous career in Insurance and Banking.
Aled is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development with over 30 years HR experience, working in a variety of roles and industries in small, medium and large organisations in the public sector, private sector and the third sector. He is CIPD qualified and has a Masters in Strategic Personnel and Development with a talent for organisational development and enabling transformational change. He is passionate about achieving results through people by simultaneously enhancing employee engagement and performance and human capital.
Aled is recognised for his drive, determination and pragmatism which have underpinned his success in facilitating culture change, managing complex people challenges and enhancing workforce resilience. Aled brings a wealth of proven experience that enables organisations to achieve their goals and address people related challenges.
Donna brings over 20 years of experience in the public and third sectors, with a strong background in data, IT and compliance, and, more recently, communications and external affairs. Since joining Adferiad in 2017, Donna has been committed to advancing digital health approaches in the third sector and is deeply passionate about showcasing the charity’s impact while addressing health inequalities in Wales.
As Adferiad’s Data Protection Officer, Donna led the successful implementation of GDPR in 2018, overseeing the project management of this critical transition. Her more recent work has focused on the integration of AI, where she is steering the charity’s initiatives in this innovative field.
Donna has also been instrumental in developing and implementing strategies in Communications, Policy, and Research, establishing these areas as key functions within the organisation.
Her leadership has ensured that data and IT are at the forefront of service design, delivery, and transformation, with the goal of improving outcomes for all of Adferiad’s stakeholders.

Donna is passionate about incorporating the voice of lived experience into all aspects of the charity’s work, using data and technology to drive transformation, and ensuring that Adferiad addresses inequalities in health to improve outcomes for everyone it serves.
Kim Ellis, our Director of Hospital, Residential & Therapeutic Services.
Kim has worked for Adferiad for 16 years and oversees all of Adferiad’s counselling and Tier 4 services. Kim is a registered mental health nurse, and is experienced in working with challenging behaviour, mental illness, and substance use in nursing, therapeutic and management roles. Kim holds a Bachelor of Nursing (mental health) Hons Degree, an FdA Substance Misuse degree and an ILM Level 5 in Leadership and Management Development.
Kim believes in fostering a positive and collaborative work environment, ensuring that each team member feels valued and supported in their role. She is lead of our established staff wellbeing and support service with the experience of setting such services up, she has a calm approach with all aspects of her work and is committed to staff and client well-being, priding herself on creating a compassionate and supportive environment for all.
Experienced in making critical decisions under pressure, employing a strategic and analytical approach to problem-solving whilst maintaining high ethical standards, ensuring the safety and well-being of both staff and clients. Kim is committed to ongoing quality improvement initiatives and works to create a culture of continuous improvement, actively seeking opportunities to refine, optimize and expand our services.
With over 20 years of experience at Adferiad and its precursor organisations, Lianne has navigated a diverse range of roles, evolving from administration to senior management. Currently serving as the Director of Operations (South), she has made significant contributions across various sectors, including HR, Finance, mental health, and criminal justice.
Lianne’s commitment to people is unwavering; she believes that service users are at the heart of every initiative. Her passion for leadership and management is evident in her work, whether organising impactful events, campaigning for change, or delivering quality services. A dedicated advocate for positive transformation, Lianne continues to drive progress in all areas she engages with.
Naomii brings extensive experience in service delivery, peer mentoring, and leadership within the third sector.
Naomii began her journey by leading the formation of ‘Word on the Street,’ a service user group which partnered with the University of Central Lancashire to conduct critical research on access barriers to mental health and substance use services. This work directly influenced Welsh Government recommendations, leading to the creation of peer mentoring services aimed at improving access to education, training, and employment for service users, families, and carers.
As a Service Manager, Naomii successfully oversaw the delivery of the first peer mentoring project in North Wales and contributed to the expansion of these services nationwide. Her strategic leadership has been integral in securing and managing several Welsh Government contracts, enabling the rollout of peer mentoring projects across Wales in partnership with other third sector organisations.
In her current role as Director of Operations (North), Naomii oversees a significant number of services, ensuring that lived experience remains at the heart of service design and delivery. Her leadership continues to enhance Adferiad’s impact on communities across Wales, aligning with the organisation’s mission to improve outcomes for those facing complex challenges. Over her career Naomii has led on the development of a number of third sector services in fields such as housing and homelessness, veterans support and employment and mentoring.
Sandy has over 30 years of experience of working within in the private and third sector. A qualified accountant with extensive knowledge of charity finances, Sandy specialises in business development and financial planning. Her recent work includes the successful development and setup of a finance team and processes, following a complex organisational merger, ensuring seamless integration and improved financial operations.
Qualified at master’s degree level, in the Innovation of Social Enterprises, Sandy has a deep understanding of the challenges faced by non-profits and social enterprises and is skilled and experienced in aligning financial strategies with mission-driven goals, helping organisations maximise their social impact while maintaining financial stability.
Sandy is passionate about supporting small charities and not-for-profit businesses, to enhance their financial sustainability and drive growth.

Helen retired in 2013 after 40 years in the NHS. She was Nurse Director for Mental Health and has held senior nursing positions within Mental Health at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board for over 17 years. Helen was awarded the first Lifetime achievement award by the Royal College of Nursing in 2013, being nominated by service users and staff.
Helen was instrumental in changing the law in 1991 with regard to getting free legal representation for mental health service users. She has experience working with the NHS Ombudsman for two and a half years as the internal professional nursing adviser for mental health and has worked as a professional adviser for the Care Quality Commission. Helen is a CHKS surveyor with expertise in all aspects of Governance, mental health and addiction treatments and recovery. She has undertaken surveys across Europe.
Helen was one of the six Inquiry panel members from across the UK for the MIND UK campaign (Care in Crisis 2012. MIND UK).
Helen was a member of the three-person Independent Oversight Panel regarding the North Wales enquiry into alleged abuse of older people within the NHS in 2018
Helen works as a professional Consultant to a service user led charity – Adferiad and developed a user led hospital for rehabilitation and recovery, reviewed services in line with best practice, investigations and training.
Helen has been a committee member for NICE for the new mental health rehabilitation and recovery NICE guidelines published in July 2020.
Helen is a Vice president of Gamian Europe (on behalf of Adferiad) which influences the European parliament and community on advocacy, evidence based mental health care led by those with a lived experience.
Helen has worked with individuals with a lived experience to develop training materials for mental health including self-injury and suicide awareness, mental health awareness, perinatal mental health and peer support whilst with Adferiad.
