About the Project
Adferiad Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) works alongside the NHS early intervention service for psychosis in Gwent. The service is directed at those who have experienced a first episode of psychosis and aims to aid in recovery during the early stages of psychosis, schizophrenia and other presentations of schizophreniform symptoms. The service is important, as often with conditions such as psychosis and schizophrenia, there are many obstacles that those diagnosed face on a daily basis.
This includes other mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation and many more. As well as these, physiological problems such as deteriorated physical health, weight gain, and reduced cardiovascular fitness are also challenges that are faced.
Who do we support?
Our service provides support and interventions for those between the ages of 16 and 35 who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis. Our service users reside in all areas across Gwent.
How do we do it?
We adopt a client-led, therapeutic approach which consists of one-to-one visits that are tailored to the patient’s personal and circumstantial needs rather than adopting a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Our service treats each patient as individuals with the autonomy and comfort to choose how they access our service. Advice is given by experienced mental health professionals within the wider EIP team, including psychiatric consultants, occupational therapists, physical health specialists and many experienced psychologists and nurses. The approach we use also consists of community-based activities, and having partnered our service with other bodies such as the Gwent Wildlife Trust, we are able to offer a vast range of activities that aim to build on our patients’ confidence, self-esteem, anxiety and overall mental wellbeing.
Referral
The patients that we see and provide support for are those currently accessing the early intervention for psychosis service in the NHS, where the care coordinators for these individuals see it suitable for their patients to engage in psychosocial intervention. Referrals are taken from anyone, including self-referral; however, there is an option to email ABB.EISReferrals@wales.nhs.uk
