About the Service
The Small Grant Scheme operates within Gwent It offers a wide range of grants from; white goods items to driving lessons to breaks away to courses. The vast variety of grants allows us to reach more carers to support. It can be applied for by carers themselves which provides carers with confidence and independence.
We provide support to all unpaid carers such as
- Young carers
- Parent Carers
- Partner Carers
- Sibling Carers
- Friend Carers
Support through small grants are provided directly to the carer.
The service offers support with:
- Grants provided directly to unpaid carers
- Self application provides independence to unpaid carers
- Signpost to other avenues of support to meet specific needs
- Referrals to the Gwent Carers hub
- Referrals to local authorities within Gwent
Key Guidelines
- A maximum of £700 during a 12-month period and any 2 different categories can be awarded per household or between all the Carers caring for the same person regardless of where they live.

The four Small Grant categories are:
- Carers Access – maximum award £250 and £500 for driving lessons only
Carers Access aims to remove some of the transport-related barriers to living a full and independent life that may have been placed on a person by their caring role. For example the grant could be used towards the cost of driving lessons.
- Carers Essentials – maximum award £300
Carers in Gwent can apply for small grants of up to £300 towards the cost of ONE piece of household equipment which will benefit them in their caring role.
- Carers Skills – maximum award £300
These grants for learning new skills that can help with the caring role, help carers return to work or to have a new interest/hobby outside the caring role.
- Carers Time Out – maximum award £300
The ‘Time Out’ small grant is designed to give carers in Gwent a break/respite from their caring role.

With the support of the Gwent Regional Partnership Board and funding from the Welsh Government, unpaid Carers living in the Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Monmouthshire and Torfaen areas can apply for a small grant. These grants are for both adult and young carers.
